Annette,

Do not paint the drawer interiors. If the dresser (chest of drawers) is over 100 years old it likely has an alcohol soluable finish like spirit copal varnish or shellac. Leave this finish intact. Clean the chest with mineral spirits, mask off the areas not to be painted, and paint your chest.

I cannot determine how valuable or historically significant your chest is without seeing it. There is the possibility that painting it will hurt its value. But, it is your chest of drawers. You call the shots.
