Carol, I frequently remove old coverings to find cotton batting on top of the hores hair stuffing. If you don't see this batting, I would consider adding some. Old springs will become weak and may need to be replaced with new springs, but I am not impressed with a thick slab of foam, after a bit this seems hard, and in fifteen years it will crumble into dust anyway.
