I think that the shellac, haveing alcohol as the vehicle, and varnish being oil base may not mingle. The boiled linseed oil is already in varnish, so that sounds off too. I think what you have is the old time tested finish of one coat of boiled linseed oil, two coats of three Lb. shellac, and a top coat of oil base varnish. I got started on this formula and it worked perfect every time, light sand between coats, and tint the oil with no more than 10 % oil base paint if you want color stain. It's an old fashioned formula, new stains and finishes are just as good, and have a lot of chemists testing the results, you decide.
