Mayonnaise on heat marks

I am captivated by this site! I've not been much of a furniture restorer, but you all make me feel like I could be!!! Thanks!

I read something here about using mayonnaise to remove heat stains from a table top. We inherited a 1920's veneered dining set that my mother in law would regularly use as an ironing surface! There are at least 3 clear iron shaped white marks on the table. I'm guessing the stains have been there since my husband was a child (he's 44 now.) Would the mayonnaise work on these old stains? If I could remove these ugly things, I would be thrilled to have the table live without a tablecloth all the time!

Thanks! Maureen
