If the piece only has an assorted dirt on it then the best cleaner would be soap and water. Wash rinse and wipe dry. Approximate age can be determined by looking at the method of construction. Look for square nails they were used until about 1900 for furniture. Check the boards for hand plane marks, look for hand cut dove tails, check joints for mortice and tenon joinery. Look at the substrate earlier pices were pine later ones were frequently poplar.
