Mr. Normi, Shooting for the glass top finish may be unobtainable without experience. Why not just strip it as Jim describes - followed by a good sanding 150 - 180 grit depending on the scratches, - pick out a stain that will give you the color you're after, try an oil base stain, - followed by several coats of a good brushing varnish and the right hair brush. It may not be glass but it will be more then acceptable and probably within your reach.
