ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

duncan phyfe style dining room table

I have a duncan phyfe style table that isn't in good shape. I would like to restore it or refinish it whichever it needs but I don't have a clue where to start. We live out in the boonies so there isn't anywhere near to take it! The veneer is scratched, dry, and has a couple of deep gouges. Other than some scratches the two pedestal and the underside of the table are in good shape. A lot of the tables I have seen in this style have shiny almost glass like tops. How do I achieve this from what I have now? I need step by step instructions on this. Thanks.
