If the split is the result of shrinkage then you will need to make slender wedges of identical wood of similar age. Make shure the split is free of glue or splinters, glue in the wedges using slow epoxy, tap on the broad end so that the wedge becomes tighter as it goes into the split. Wipe off any excess glue with white vinegar till clean, also wax the outer area before to help here. After the glue is dry cut and sand the protruding wood away and scrape flush. Stain the spot and finish to match surrounding area. If the split is the result of over racking or twisting, remove the pins with a small drill, clean out remainder of the pins. Glue with a wood glue and clamp shut, place new pins back into the original holes. Declamp and clean off excess glue when dry.
