Dissassemble it as much as you can. Using an old bristle paint brush apply Kutzit stripper. Lay the item so that the surface you are stripping is flat and let the Kutzit soak for several minutes. Then agitate the finish as it is releasing. Wash the waste off with clean Kutzit working it down using the paint brush. Wash the inside and back with the Kutzit. Wipe dry. Air dry. A pad sander with Norton Brand 120 grit sandpaper will remove blemishes, splinters, rough edges, and make the piece accept stain. The wood likes Minwax stain. Provincial or Golden Oak are good choices in color. Then you can brush on a sealer. Use 00 Fine Steel wool as much as you want between each process.
