Polishing Spar Varnish Finish

I recently applied a coat of spar varnish to an oak breakfast eating table and I'm not completely happy with the look. It's too glossy. I think I applied the varnish too thick.

I'd like to tone it down or mellow it a bit but I'm not sure what methods to use. Should I rub with 0000 steel wool? Do I need to use a polish or wax as lubricant with whatever I use?

Thanks
