Most oil stains give a safe finish for wood surfaces that get infrequent use, ie. carvings, picture frames, what have you. Chairs I feel need a more protective finish than just oil. Some use numerous coats of oil, however that is a lot of work compared to one coat of oil and a good finish. Try adding at least a couple coats of wax, or some shellac or varnish for real tough protection.
