In Response To: piano (Barbara)

Use a cotton swab and denatured alcohol touch the finish in a concealed area and see if it dissolves. If it dissolves readily then it is shellac if it only becomes sticky thien it is probably lacquer. Either one can be repolished to remove minor scratcing, but if the scratches are heavy then you will most likely need to have sand the existing finish lightl with 360 wet dry paper and recoat the piano.
