Your problem is tha poly is just not compatible with any other finish. I would suggest that you quit using poly. If you are using shellac as a sealer then one or two coats of 2lb. cut is plenty, then put lacquer or varnish over that. Either one will look better than poly and given reasonable care will last for 100 yrs.
