ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

dating early finish?

We are restoring a very old spinning wheel - early 1800's? - - probably from New England that appears to have originally been finished with a thin red stain. This was probably an attempt to match the oak used in the rim of the wheel and the table of the wheel to the maple or other wood used in the turnings.

The use of a reddish stain was mentioned once on Antiques Roadshow a while back, but I forget what to period the furniture in question dated. Anyone know anything about this practice? Thanks! Grace
