Tom I think that you may be looking at is the fumed oak that was developed by Gustov Stickley during the Mission period. The furniture was exposed to amonia fumes to darken the wood and give it an even color. You may have to sand and bleach to get the color to lighten up. Start with a couple aplications of Oxalic Acid to lighten the color. If more is required sand and bleach with a heavy duty chlorine bleach, good luck.
