So far I think you are doing all the right things. Allow 48 hours to dry and smooth out the repair with a flat sanding block of wood covered with a couple layers of paper towel and some 600 grit wet/dry sand paper. Lubricate the sanding with Naptha, water, or Paraffin Oil. I like the Paraffin Oil, polish with a cream polish or Rotten Stone and Paraffin oil, then Wax if you like.
