ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

antique mahogany buffet/hutch

We recently purchased an antique mahogany buffet/hutch combination. After a week or two, we noticed a fine, white powder seeping from the joints. My husband, a furniture rep, thought it was caused by some kind of parasite. We sealed the house and "bombed" it with a gas fumigator, and sure enough. small dead bugs appeared on the shelves. It has been perhaps a month and the powder is reappearing. Did we not kill all of the bugs? Or did dormant eggs hatch a new generation of bugs? Or were the dead bugs a coincidence and the cause of the problem never bugs to begin with, but some kind of dry rot or oxidation? Does the problem pose a threat to other furniture in our home? I would appreciate your advice. Thanks!
