mahogany sideboard

I purchased a mahogany sideboard that has a ring on the top where it appears a round vase set and the shellac finish was removed down to the bare wood. I cleaned the top and using an artist brush painted orange shellac over the bare wood. I now need to sand this recoated area flush to the original finish. How can this be done--what grit paper and should this be a wet sand? If so, what should the lubricant be. thanks
