ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Restoring the top of an old farmhouse table

We have a large 19th c. farmhouse table that we use in our dining room as our family dining table. It is seriously cracked and stained. Usually I put a table cloth over it but it is better looking without a cover. Whenever I go to wipe it off after supper I sometimes get slivers because of the cracking. I'm wondering if the top should be sanded down smooth and then oiled or waxed. I know it is usually taboo to refinish an antique so I may just have to live with it. Please let me know. Thanks. Georgine Craig
