ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

1890 french mirror frame

I was wondering if you could help me, I am begining to clean an 1890 french mirror frame. It has very decorative corners with what I thought were plaster leaves and other fine details. On closer inspection it appears to have a layer of a darker coloured substance like plaster, but more the colour of putty. I was hoping you could tell me what was used to cast these mouldings, other than plaster? And if I can still get hold of some, although I realise that this is an American site and I live in England!
