I prefer not to remove the paper from the old trunks as that is the original look and removeing it will only lower the value. I am afraid that a waterbased finish may have been used inside, hence the mold, you may have to dry out yhe wood and scoure off the shiny surface with a scotch brite pad. Try a teaspoon of cinnamon sprinkled onto a handful of aromatic cedar chips, placed in a bowl, and left inside with the lid shut. After two weeks the odor should be gone, once the mold has been cleaned out.
