In Response To: removing old coatings (Jeff Poole)

A 50/50 mix of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol will probably remove the old finish. You can apply using a cotton rag that wi squeezed until it doesn't drip. Rub in small circles and change the surface of the pad when it gets dirty. This lets you control how much of the finish you remove and if done carefully will can be contrled to stop at the color you want. Then let the pieces dry for 3 days then top coat with lacquer or shellac and polish with 0000 steel wool.
