removing old coatings

I have recently inherited some old silky oak furniture The old coating has gone very dark, I don't know if it is french polish or shellack or something else. Is there some way of cleaning off this old coating to restore the original silky oak? Other items i have done up before i have pulled them all apart and sanded each piece & then put it all back together. Some of these new pieces have ply insets and i cannot pull them apart. Is there some kind of cleaners that will remove these old coatings? It would be much apreciated any help that you could give me.

With thanks Jeff Poole
