Hand Rubbed Finish

Can you tell me exactly what is meant by a hand-rubbed finish? I want to finish a mahogany table top as well as some bebinga stair hand-rails. I'm hoping for an oil finish polished look that can be recoated as opposed to something that creats a hard outer surface. I would appreciate your comments and advice. A friend suggested mixing linseed oil and bees wax. I read your comments not to use linseed oil but still wasn't clear if the substitute products should be mixed with bees wax, and if so, to what ratio. Thanks
