My personal favorite method of cleaning old finishes is wet sanding. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and purchase some 600 grit wet-sanding paper (0000 steel wool like James mentioned works too), and find a good lubricant oil. My favorite, by far, is Jacob's Orange Oil and can be purchased at www.jacobsfft.com. Apply a good amount of the oil to the surface of the wood and move the sand paper in the direction of the wood grain using only the weight of your hand. unless you've got an enormous amount of build up, you'll be amazed at the results. The wood will look great and will be smooth as glass. Hope this helps.
