I use 0000 steel wool and Naptha (paint thinner) to remove old wax and dirt. Start in the back in an out of sight part to be safe, if anything seems not right stop and get more advice. Once I have lightly scrubbed an area I wipe it clean with paper towels, checking to see when the towel wipes clean, then moving on to a new spot. Once I have covered the entire piece I use a mild soap on a slightly dampened cotton cloth briefly, dry right away. If no dirt seems to come off with this aplication skip it and move right on to a paste wax, buff up a shine amd you're done.
