Yes, shellac is your answer. Do not sand out any dents, scratches or any other impurities for that is known as patina. This is very important for the piece. It shows it age, history and life. the value of the piece is not only in the design, age, and maker but also in the finish and patina. To help you with the color problem, you may want to mix water stains and apply to the brown to match the red color desired. This should be a slow process working your way light to dark until you achieve your color. use wax only after shellac is applied and sanded with micro-mesh (extremely high grit sand paper, up to 8000 grit). Hope this help, it works for me. though there are many ways, whatever works for you.
