color matching problem...dye stains?

I am having difficulty matching new oak veneer with old. the problem is that I cannot seem to get the color dark enough to match the prexisting veneer that is a dark brown with very little grain coming through. I have used water stains that and have mixed pigments myself, though they are not taking to well and have come up too light. Are dye stains my answer and which kind do you recommend. I am on a deadline so it would be greatly appreciated if someone with answers can respond asap. thank you.
