Mechanial removal should work heat the glue with a hair drier then scrape with a soft scraper. A credit card works well, but it sometimes ruins the card. It is very difficult to date a piece without seeing it. Look at the carvings and see if they are hand or machine made. Hand done will have slight variations machine will be much more regular. The type of joinery will also give a good clue mewer pieces will have doweled joints, older ones will be mortice and tenon. You can take some good photos to a local dealer and they should be able to help you.
