If you can post a photo of the mechanism I might be able to help you. There were so many different mechanisms the only way is to see what you have. The tabel whould be well worth refinishing and that should improve its value. You do want to check first to see if it is veneered so that if it is you can take extra care not to damage the veneer. On lots of pieces this age stripping followed by a rubbing with 00 wool or 3M purple pads is all that is needed to prepare them for finishing and frequently you do not need to stain as the original color plus ageing will give you a very nice look.
