The joints you are asking about are Knapp joints. Knapp invented and patented the machine to make this type of joint about 1865. The "pegs" are cut into the end of the drawer front or back not made with seperate dowels. They are very stong joints and were used for a short time until the automatic dove tail machine was invented. You will find pieces that have one type on one end of a drawer and the other on the other end. I guess the manufacturers were in the process of switching over, but were still using both for a while to get their money back on the investment they had made.
