There are several wood hardners on the market which will soak into the soft wood and then set up reinforcing the wood. Minwax makes one that I have use with good success. Pour a small amount in a clean tuna can or other such container and set the leg(s) in it and let it soak in until no more will absorb then set aside for a couple of days drying. When you are working on the brass I do not recommend using steel wool as it can scratch the brass and unless you have a buffing wheel the scratches are very difficul to remove. This set probably had bright brass when new.
