Is the "old-english scratch remover" type dye acceptable?

On one or two legs of the chairs, at the feet, the wood seems a little soft. IT appears maybe the those legs sat on a wet carpet for a while and resembles beginning stages of rot. IT is darkened balckish and is soft. I found some stuff in Home Depot that was something to the effect of "wood hardener" to re-harden rotted wood.....Is this a product advisable to be used on antigues? and what affect will it have to future polishings or other repairs? Any suggestions on this problem?
