Most metal iceboxes were made with baked enamel or porcelain surfaces. Try removeing the paint with denature alcohol in a small area. If it will come off that should no hurt the original surface. If that deos not remove the new paint try a little lacquer thinner check to see if it is romoving the orignal, if not then you can safely remove the new paint this way. Many of the metal iceboxes had two color paint schemes or striping around the perimeter of doors and panels.
