Jim is right, brass will not stand up to amonia , I use amonia fumes to darken brass but only sparingly, and then it must be rinsed off completely. With plating it is too thin to resist the effect for very long especially when in direct contact, and will be eaten right off. I think the store you went to should be taught a lesson. Ask them to pay for part of the replating, since it was already in less than perfect condition. If they refuse you can take your business somewhere else. Mabey next time they won't give advice about things they haven't tried.
