A good cleaning with soap and water is where I start. Use mild soap and do not soak the pieces just dampent rinse and wipe dry. You may have to do this several times to remove the soot and grime. Also try wasthing with mineral spirits to remove oily residue. Once they are clean then reoil them and you should be in good shape.
