A mixture of vinegar and salt is a safe cleaner for copper, followed with a wiping with "Never Dull" pad. Sold in many hardware stores, wipe off oil with "Naptha" on a clean cloth, and Lacquer over, if the color suits you. Or wrap in unused newspaper and inspect daily until the darkening color darkens to your liking.
