A good oil based paint should not need any protection from chipping, but if you just wanna do something else to them shellac should work just fine. Try a small area of paste wax before you shellac and see if that will give you the look you want. You can remove the paste wax with mineral spirits (paint thinner) before shellacing if you still want to add another coat of finish.
