ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

top finish for painted bookshelves

I have some bookshelves that are painted with oil-based paint. I wanted to add a top finish to protect the paint from chipping and to add some depth to the finish.

I would like to find something that will dry fairly quickly and that I can apply indoors in an air-conditioned environment.

I was thinking of mixing shellac flakes or paste wax, or both(the latter after the shellac).

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.
