Take a couple of photo's and check with locat dealers to get an idea of value. The type furniture that you are talking about is frequently veneered so you need to take care in stripping and sanding. They should not be put in a hot tank which many strip shops use for painted pieces. They should be stirpped with a cold flow over system or by hand. You should do as little sanding as possible, on many pieces a light sanding with 220 is all that is needed. Any dents or gouges shoul not be sanded out, rather they should be repaired. Staining depends on the color you want. Lots of old pieces do not need to be stained just clear coated then rubbed out. Once you have the pieces clean wet a section with mineral spirits and see what color it will be if you just clear coat.
