Oops! Sometimes I forget to say that you need to work up through grits of paper till you finish out with 600 which will give you a surface smooth enough to gild. I normally woudl start with 100 or 220 then 32 0r 360 then 600. I have found that this combination will remove the scratch marks from previous grits in a reasonaable amount of time. I don't know what brand of spack I have in the shop, but next time I need some I will look for the Elmers and give it a try. I have to replace mine fairly often because it molds in this climate, even with the air conditioner running.
