It depends on the size of the chips. If they are small 1/2" or less then fill them with wood filler match them to the base color then grain them to blen with the top. If they are bigger then patches can be put in and finished to match. They can be patched by beveling the edge of the edge of the existing veneer about 60 degrees then cutting a patch that overlaps the existing veneer then gluing and clamping the patch in place and sanding level once it has dried. If you pich patches with good grain matches the will be almost invisible once finished. Wheter or not to go to a professional depends on your skill and patience.
