Oak Veneer Buffet

I recently purchased a buffet which is a dark oak veneer. Problem with it is the top, which is badly damaged with chips of the veneer missing also, I think that something hot had been placed on it as the finish is damaged (a large very rough spot)....can I fill in these chipped areas and sand out the finish ...or should I leave this job to a professional? the total area is 19" x 44"....would it be an expensive repair?
