Terry the treatment that you describe will work. The only change I would suggest is that you put a little retarder in you shellac to allow it mor time to flow and level. My approach would be to rub the entire piece using a rubber with alcohol only changing surfaces as it gets dirty, alow three days to dry then shoot a coat or two 3lb. cut shellac and polish from there.
