These chests are mostly made in China, or if not in China, by Chinese in other Asian countries. There are Chinese communities in the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, etc. If your uncle was in the South Pacific he probably stopped at a port and brought back one of these chests. It was very common for a sailor to do, almost traditional, as a way of showing other sailors that he had been around, and old tar so to speak.
