Thank you Jim. This advice sounds good and it really helps me. Since posting my query, I've had time to go over much more of the discussion and I think I've learned alot. (even, for instance, that old pine will sometimes has a reddish colour, like this piece of mine). I've been working on the samding and filling of those tiny worm holes and the whole thing is coming up quite nice. IN fact, I'm surprised and now just scared that I will screw something up from here on in!

I see someone mentions that shellac is not a good finish for old pine like this. So can I ask one more question about piece (I think it was a big wash stand actually). What final finish should I use? Should it be lacquer? Apply in one direction only--is that what "no back brushing" means?
