Water gilding is a very specific type of gilding and does require instruction. If your frames have large areas of uncomplicated mouldings then that is the appropriate gilding type. Nothing can effectively mimic burnished water gilt, and learning the process will reward you with a valuable skill. Complex patterned moulding areas would be oil gilt, which uses a different type of adherent. To learn how-try to speak to listed art restorers-they will put you on the right track.
