In Response To: roll top desk refinish (Malinda)

Second part firs, you do need to remove the tambour, most roll tops either sit on dowels or are screwed to the desk top. If you seperate the two pieces the tambour can be slid out of the front fo the case. You can remove the finish with lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol mixed 50/50. Use a cotton rag squeeze it out until it no longer drips then rub the slats lengthwise turning the rag as it becomes soiled. Be careful no to get the piece too wt as this will disolve the glue that holds the canvas to the slats. When you are finishing the tambour lay it flat on a table, as soon as the finish dries to the touch flex the tabour one slat at a time to keep mthe finish from sticking the slats together.
