Yep I tried that a little bit. About 45 minutes yeilded removing maybe 15% of the varnish on one knob and some residual scratches. The scratches tend to mar a little deep. Not gouges mind you, but more like small cracks that can't be polished out. That's when I stopped and thought to look for something I might soak them in. Maybe something as simple as alcohol or water for a couple weeks... If I could get the varnish to soften a bit I could then probably get it off by scraping or something but it's on there like a good glue and very hard.

I agree that a regular stripper would eat the plastic or bakelite as well.
