ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Removing very old varnish from plastic (bakelite)?

Hello,

I've got a 1948 antique radio. My well intentioned grandfather got varnish all over the grill cloth and knobx many years back. I'm wondering how I can safely remove the varnish particularly the old plastic knobs. Maybe I could slow soak them for an extended period in something...? Sanding isn't an option and I'm afraid strippers would be bad for the plastic (these are actually probably bakelite an early form of plastic).

Thanks for any safe varnish removal tips! -Todd
